Education - Nevada County Schools

A Great Place for Our Youth

Nevada County residents enjoy a high quality of life that includes overall excellence in public education. Our educators produce high scholastic achievement and students well prepared for success in the workplace. Some evidence:

  • Reading Scores: Nevada County Schools placed second highest K-12 reading scores in California according to the 2003 STAR test results. (The schools in Marin County placed first)
  • Mathematic Scores: Again our schools placed second highest grades K-12 math scores in California according to the 2003 STAR test results. (Marin County ranked first)
  • S.A.T. Scores: Nevada Union High and Bear River High students average in the 90th percentile on a nationwide basis.
  • College Bound: Over 70% of our high school graduates progress to higher educational institutions (community college, CSU, UC and private schools)
  • Dropouts: The high school district's dropout rate is 2.9% -- one of the lowest in the entire state.
  • Wide Selection: Varieties of educational options are available and include -- single K-8 schools, small rural schools, larger mid-sized schools, charter schools and academic specialty schools.
  • Charter Schools: Nevada County boasts the greatest amount of charter schools per capita in California. A variety of educational offerings are available in each of the nine charters.
  • National Blue Ribbon Schools: Nevada Union High, Alta Sierra School, Cottage Hill School, Pleasant Ridge School, and Nevada City School of the Arts were named Blue Ribbon Schools by the President for academic excellence.
  • California Distinguished Schools: In the past decade, many schools throughout the county have been recognized as Distinguished Schools by the Governor for academic excellence.
